What Really Slows Your Metabolism After 40 (It’s Not Just “Age”)
“My metabolism just stopped” is one of the most common things people say in their forties. The truth is more useful than the myth: metabolism changes, but several of the drivers are things you can influence.
Muscle. We gradually lose muscle with age unless we work to keep it. Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so less of it means fewer calories burned at rest. Resistance training a couple of times a week is the most reliable lever.
Sleep and stress. Short or broken sleep and chronic stress shift the hormones that govern hunger and fat storage, nudging the body to hold on to weight. This is why rest belongs in any serious plan.
Protein and movement. Getting enough protein and staying generally active throughout the day both support a healthier metabolic picture.
None of this is a magic switch. But framed correctly, “metabolism after 40” becomes a set of habits you can actually work with, rather than a life sentence.
